The Free Linux Disks Project needs your help - Please Read

Due to overwhelming demand for free Linux disks, starting on August 3rd, we will temporarily limit the number of requests we will accept a day. The project is still in need of about $50,000 in additional funding to fill all the current requests. We grossly underestimated the amount of requests we would receive and the amount of funding we would receive. We have raised some funds via donations and sponsorships, but the current funding will only fill about 5% of the requests. The word has spread far and wide to users about the free Linux disks available via this project. But not far enough into the Linux business community. Not far enough to attract some big sponsors.

If you will be attending LinuxWorld, please tell the vendors about this project. I am unable to attend this year’s conference. I am using all available time and funds to fulfill as many requests as possible. I am confident there are many people in the Linux community that can help spread the word to the vendors at LinuxWorld. Please contact us if you will be attending and you are willing to help.

If you have requested a disk, you can ease the funding issue a little by paying for the cost to fill your request. You can do so when you check your status. When you check your status you will be shown the cost to fulfill your request and a PayPal Buy Now button. The cost to fulfill your request includes the media, packaging and stamps/postage. We add a very small amount to pay for the infrastructure needed to keep this project going (web hosting, CD/DVD duplication equipment, etc). It is not the goal of TheLinuxStore.ca to profit from this project. Our goal is to spread Linux disks to users around the world that are interested in Linux but do not have the means to obtain it themselves.

You can also help by donating. You can send donations online using PayPal or MoneyBookers. We have also setup a post office box for you to send cheques and money orders. A post office box keeps your mailings safe and sheltered indoors. We have also setup a bank account dedicated to this project. You can deposit donations directly to the bank account. You can also send donations using Western Union. 100% of your donation is used to fulfill requests.

Together with support from the community, we are confident and determined to fulfill every single request.

I think you should give priority to the most needed countries, in countries like the USA and spain must be esier to get linux distribution, while in south america is less known this operating system.

Is it possible for the community to help, by distributing the load of the disks?
For example, match people up, with someone near by, that will be able to burn them a disk.
I know that our local LUG often has requests for someone in area X who can provide them with a disc. If everyone pitched in, did maybe 10 discs for their local area, it could work well!

Let me know if this is possible!

    Tim

We are considering that possibility.  But there are a couple issues.  One, there is a privacy issue.  We made a promise to not share personal information.  Second, new users may be a little unsure of burned CDs arriving in the mail.  They may think the software is pirated or lesser quality.  Nevertheless, we are looking at this possibly very closely.  We have received very little monetary support, which makes it difficult to stick to our original plan of producing the disks professionally and shipping from our office.

I would be glad to help out as Tim has suggested. I have DVD/CD burners at my disposel and several disks of both types as well. Although I don’t have the funds to go purchase additional disks I would gladly use what I have to help out.

I think its better to hire freelancer/community in every country wich have many request, give them authority on productions and distributions, make supervision on them and of course give them the production and shipping cost.

Maybe you shouldn’t send out CDs/DVDs for free. I mean, 60-something percent of the US has DSL or faster connections, so we can download them. (I myself an on a 50.6k modem.) I say, sell the discs, and offer downloads for free. Of course, you should offer free discs to some of the lower-economy countries, but at least not give free discs to the US. (Incidentally, if Japan jumps up in requests, stop those too–Japan’s so ahead in the Internet area, they’re already on IPv6.)

You are all so ignorant. Everyone in America is rich and has fast internet. I live in a very low income area. I use the library or work for internet acess, and can’t download from there. I have a slow laptop at home, but no net connection. If I could afford the stupid disks, I would not have asked for them for free. Stop making assumptions.

Hey, your project is great. What I can do from Uruguay is after I get the disk you send me, I can start making copies here to anyone that ask me to (if they give me the media).
I’ve already made copies to my student fellows from some distributions I downloaded my self already.
Keep going and I hope this can get much better.

Hello! I am ordinary Russian teacher. I ask you some distribution kits for children of one Russian school with an inclination in computer science. I do it to show them about existence of operational systems distinct from WINDOWS taken roots in their consciousness. And also to show to them an opportunity of united people. But the salary of the teacher is insufficient for realization of this plan. I hope for your understanding.

PS: It was always hard for me to ask some things. Sorry to truble you.
